Sanchez benched against Cardinals

Sanchez benched against Cardinals

Rex Ryan’s self-preservation instincts kicked in when he finally benched an imploding Mark Sanchez, who may have been on his way to getting him fired. Now he’s got another quarterback controversy.

After eight months of Sanchez vs. Tim Tebow, now it’s Sanchez vs. Greg McElroy, and it could eventually be Sanchez vs. McElroy vs. Tebow once the latter’s broken ribs are healed. The Jets could be the first team to have quarterback controversies involving three different players in one season. More fun.

Ryan refused to name his starter for Sunday’s game in Jacksonville. He benched Sanchez in the third quarter for the first time in their four years together — the QB looked lost with three more interceptions — and put in McElroy, when it was evident one touchdown was going to win this game against the offensively inept Cardinals and Sanchez was not going to get it for him.

Ryan is going to keep the Jaguars guessing as long as possible, but as he does that, he invites a week of chaos, just what the Jets don’t need.
So, what should Ryan do?

He should go back to Sanchez. McElroy is a game manager. He is not a playmaker. He doesn’t have a big arm. There is a reason he was inactive the first 11 games of the season. He is not the future. The Jets are still alive in the wild-card race (the Patriots clinched the AFC East) and I just wouldn’t put December and the season in the inexperienced McElroy’s hands.

He is a smart, tough kid, who brought energy to the stadium when Ryan put him in with 4:48 left in the third quarter and the Jets down 3-0 to a team that would end up 0-for-15 on third down. McElroy flipped a 1-yard TD pass to Jeff Cumberland five seconds into the fourth quarter on his 10-play first series. He also completed a third-down pass to Jeremy Kerley to keep a late drive alive that allowed the Jets to run out the clock. The Jets’ running game picked up when he entered the game, which means he also brought energy to the huddle. The best thing he did was not turn the ball over.

“I’ll let you guys know who’s going to be the quarterback when I’m ready,” Ryan said after the dreary 7-6 victory. “We’ll evaluate our situation as the week goes on.”
