Review:
At this point, it seems most Hollywood romantic comedies are designed to avoid making their characters in any way “unlikeable.” In this one, former European soccer star George Dryer (Gerard Butler) moves to Virginia to be closer to his ex-wife, Stacie (Jessica Biel), and son, eventually becoming coach of his son’s soccer team. The journey of a guy trying to grow up enough to be a good dad is a solid dramatic premise, but for a while we mostly get the farcical roundelay of several soccer moms throwing themselves at poor George. And from the outset, he’s already a changed man — not only humbled by his fall from celebrity, but downright gentlemanly in dealing with the randy ladies. By the time the farce is abandoned in favor of a focus on whether Stacie will give George a second chance, there’s nowhere for the story to go but through a bunch of arbitrary impediments. But hey, the important thing is that we all come out of the experience liking Gerard Butler enough to pay for his next romantic leading role, whether or not you ever gave a rat’s ass about who he was in this role.
