Relief is finally on way for the two young women from Palghar, Maharashtra whose frank opinion on Mumbai's shutdown for Bal Thackeray's funeral put them at the receiving end of the Shiv Sena and an over-zealous Maharashtra police.

Police sources said today that a decision has been taken to close the case against Shaheen Dhada and her friend Renu Srinivasan. No chargesheet will be filed and the police will go for a closure report.

A closure report is usually filed by the police before the court when investigators conclude that no case is made out against the accused.

The decision is bound to thrill Shaheen and Renu's families, who have been waiting to see them exonerated.

Shaheen and Renu were arrested on November 19, a day after Bal Thackeray's cremation in Mumbai, on a complaint filed by a Shiv Sena leader in Palghar. A clinic run by Shaheen's uncle in Palghar was vandalised by Sena activists.

Shaheen and Renu's plight sparked off a national outrage and renewed the demand for a review of Section 66A of the Information Technology Act - one of the laws under which the two were booked. They had also been charged with causing deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings and making statements that promote hatred between classes.

Two police officers, Ravindra Sengaonkar and Shreekant Pingle, responsible for the arrests were found by a departmental probe to have applied wrong charges on the women and suspended.

But all along, the wait had been for the case to be closed.

Amid all the controversy, Shaheen and Renu showed remarkable courage and stood by their actions. "I am not scared; it's just that I want to forget about all this. I have been receiving positive support from so many people, my friends and all," Shaheen said.

Who will fill Bal Thackeray's shoes?

http://tinyurl.com/watch-news-live-here/?Who-will-fill-Bal-Thackeray-shoes

While the death of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray brings to an end an era of fiery oratory, right-wing views and sons-of-the-soil crusades, the burning question now is: who will take the Sena legacy forward and fill the political void created by his demise?

The two obvious

contenders — his son Uddhav, mild-mannered and pragmatic; and nephew Raj, charismatic and aggressive — are poles apart, and there is also the possibility of a third, unpredictable outcome.

In his last address to his followers through a video-recorded message, Thackeray appealed to them to ‘take care’ of Uddhav, who is presently the executive president of the Sena – an indication that his son would be the official heir. But will party workers follow his word?

Raj’s exit from the Sena, following a power-tussle with cousin Uddhav, and the formation of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), headed by Raj, had thrown the legacy question into uncertainty. For years before this, Raj, son of Thackeray’s younger brother Shrikanth, was seen as his political heir. Raj had been the Sena chief’s loyal companion, accompanying him everywhere, picking up his style and mannerisms, and had also headed the Sena’s student wing, the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena

Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray died on Saturday in Mumbai after prolonged illness. The 86-year-old Thackeray, who founded the Shiv Sena in 1966 to fight for the rights of Maharashtrians, was suffering from lungs and pancreatic ailments and had been put on life-support system for the last few days.

Announcing his death outside Thackeray residence 'Matoshree', the doctor said that Balasaheb breathed his last at 3.30 pm on Saturday.

According to sources, the funeral procession of the Shiv Sena founder would begin at 10 am on Sunday and Thackeray is likely to be cremated at 4 pm at Shivaji Park crematorium.

Reacting to the news, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj posted a tweet saying: "I am terribly pained to hear that the Lion is dead." She further announced the cancellation of the dinner of BJP leaders with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, scheduled for Saturday night.
